Prior to installing any of the QuickTime for Windows software, you should confirm that your system meets the following standards:
1. Hardware Requirements
* A personal computer with an 80386DX or faster CPU.
* A CPU speed of 25 MHz or higher.
* 4 megabytes of conventional and extended memory.
* A CD-ROM drive supported by Microsoft Windows (access time less than 350ms, and sustained transfer rate of at least 150K per second)
* A hard disk with at least 2 megabytes free for the basic QuickTime for Windows software.
* Mouse (or other pointing device) supported by Microsoft Windows.
* A ".WAV" compatible sound card supported by Microsoft Windows.
* For optimal viewing, a 16-bit (32,000 colors) or 24-bit (16.7 million) color video adapter is strongly recommended.
* Additional free disk space if you want to keep movies and pictures on your hard disk.
2. Software Requirements
* Microsoft Windows 3.1
3. Installing QT
QuickTime for Windows may be installed simply by copying the entire subdirectory called QTW (found inside the PC directory on the CD) onto your computer. This can be done quite easily by running the SETUP.EXE program found in the "\_MPC" directory on your CD-ROM.
The minimum required files for your movies to run properly are:
QTW\BIN\QTIM.DLL
QTW\BIN\QTIMCMGR.DLL
QTW\BIN\QCMC.DLL
QTW\BIN\QTCVID.DLL
QTW\BIN\QTIM.DLL
QTW\BIN\QTIMCMGR.DLL
QTW\BIN\QTRPZA.DLL
QTW\BIN\PLAYENU.DLL
QTW\BIN\VCR.EXE
QTW\BIN\QTNOTIFY.EXE
QTW\HELP\MCENU.HLP
QTW\HELP\PLAYENU.HLP
4. Updating Your DOS System Files
SETUP.EXE will add the proper path name to your AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot.
Installed on your hard disk you shall find the following files.
[path]:\qtw\bin\playenu.dll -----
[path]:\qtw\bin\qcmc.dll |
[path]:\qtw\bin\qtcvid.dll |
[path]:\qtw\bin\qtim.dll |-- QuickTime DLLs
[path]:\qtw\bin\qtimcmgr.dll |
[path]:\qtw\bin\qtrpza.dll ------
[path]:\qtw\bin\qtnotify.exe ------ Part of QuickTime
[path]:\qtw\bin\vcr.exe ----------- Movie Player Program
[path]:\qtw\help\mcenu.hlp -------- Help Menu 1
[path]:\qtw\help\playenu.hlp ------ Help Menu 2
[path]:\qtw\readme.txt ----------- This File
[path]:\windows\qtw.ini ----------- QuickTime Setting Data File
Hardware requirement:
* A 32K, High Color, or 16 million color graphics card is highly recommended.
Make sure your CD-ROM drive is configured properly. If your CD-ROM controller/host adapter is capable of DMA transfer, always use the DMA option. Sample "CONFIG.SYS" for Mitsumi CD-ROM drive:
device = mtmcde.sys /d:mscd001 /m:32 /i:10 /t:5
Software configuration:
SETUP.EXE should have changed your AUTOEXEC.BAT to show a path declaration to include the new QuickTime driver software. (Sample)
SET PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;[path]:\qtw\bin
To optimize playback on your machine, read the QTW.INI file inside your \WINDOWS directory for more instructions.
For optimal performance, use Microsoft CD-ROM driver 2.0 or higher. Edit your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file to allocate at least 30K drive buffer. Example :
MSCDEX /d:mscd001 /m:30
If you use Windows For Workgroup, the installation process will append a "/s" switch to MSCDEX.EXE. This will cause problem with the viewer program. Please remove the switch with a text editor and restart the computer.
For more detailed instructions on CD-ROM driver software, please consult your CD-ROM owner's manuals.
